Meet the FAA Parent: Elizabeth on Raising Curious, Kind, and Confident Kids

“There’s a warmth and attentiveness that you can feel every morning at drop-off, teachers greet the children by name with such joy; it’s clear that each child is truly cared for and valued. The communication with parents is also wonderful; we feel involved, supported, and confident that our children are in an environment that values both kindness and growth. “

Q: How important was the bilingual and international aspect when you chose a school for your children

It was a defining factor for us. We wanted our children to grow up with an appreciation for other languages and cultures and to feel comfortable in an increasingly global world. Learning French broadens their minds, linguistically, culturally, and socially while fostering curiosity, empathy, and cognitive growth from an early age.

Q: You mentioned appreciating the nurturing environment at the FAA, what does that look like in your daily experience as a parent?

What stands out most is how genuinely the teachers and staff know each child. There’s a warmth and attentiveness that you can feel every morning at drop-off, teachers greet the children by name with such joy; it’s clear that each child is truly cared for and valued. The communication with parents is also wonderful; we feel involved, supported, and confident that our children are in an environment that values both kindness and growth.

Q: How has Noah grown since starting PK4 at FAA?

Noah just began his third year at FAA, and watching his growth has been so rewarding. Though he only started PK4 about a month ago, he’s excited, adores his teachers, and eagerly shares new French expressions, songs, and stories. His French, handwriting, and letter recognition are greatly improving, and his confidence, curiosity, and independence are growing. The nurturing, engaging environment has helped him truly blossom and develop a real love of learning.

Q: What excites you most about having Isabelle begin her PK2 journey here as well?

It’s such a joy to see her follow in her big brother’s footsteps. We already know she’ll be surrounded by warmth and positivity from the PK2/3 teachers (who are extraordinary!) who make the youngest students feel safe and happy. Isabelle is naturally independent and inquisitive, so we’re also excited to see her learn a new language, build new friendships, and find her own little world within the FAA community.

Q: How do you see the FAA community supporting your children both academically and personally?

The FAA community feels like an extended family; teachers, parents, and staff all play a role in shaping the children’s sense of belonging. Academically, the bilingual curriculum challenges students to think creatively and adaptively,  skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. On a personal level, the school’s emphasis on empathy, respect, and openness fosters a sense of belonging and emotional intelligence that we deeply value. It’s a community that helps children grow not just as students, but as kind, thoughtful people.

Q: Can you share some of the activities your family enjoys together, such as hobbies, volunteer work, or sports teams you follow? How do these activities bring your family closer or create special moments together?

We love being outdoors, whether it’s a weekend nature walk, a beach day in the summer, a ski outing in the winter, or simply playing soccer in the yard. Cooking together is another favorite; the kids love to “help” in the kitchen, and it’s always messy but lots of fun. We also love reading as a family, it’s become part of our nightly rhythm and a way to slow down and connect.

Q: Do you have a favorite family trip or memory you’d like to share?

Our most meaningful memory this year was welcoming our third baby in the spring. Noah and Isabelle were so excited to meet her and have been the most loving, attentive siblings, always eager to hold her, play with her, and make her laugh. It’s special to watch their bond grow.

Q: What’s a favorite spot in your neighborhood or city where your family likes to spend time?

Our children love playing at Froggy Park, a local playground. Each visit brings new friends and adventures. It’s heartwarming to watch how imaginative and inclusive they are in their play, it’s a place filled with laughter, creativity, and connection.

We also enjoy visiting the Tenafly Nature Center where we explore the woods and trails, and visit the animals they have on site. The kids particularly love the owls!

Q: If you had to describe your family in three words, what would they be?

Adventurous, loving, and joyful

Q: Does your family have a motto or saying that you live by?

Be kind, be brave, be you.

Q: What would you say to English-speaking families who don’t speak French at home and may be unsure if bilingual education is the right fit?

I would say, don’t hesitate, bilingualism is a gift! Children are remarkably adaptable, and you’ll be amazed at how effortlessly they absorb language when immersed in a bilingual environment, and how much it enriches their cognitive and social development. Even if you don’t speak French, you’ll find that communication is seamless, teachers are bilingual, and many families are primarily English-speaking. The community is warm, inclusive, and supportive at every step.

More than anything, bilingual education is about expanding a child’s mind and worldview. It cultivates flexibility, curiosity, and empathy, qualities that extend far beyond language and help children grow into confident, globally minded individuals.
