Students in the 2nd grade are working on a year long project where they are learning about countries, continents, and cultures from all over the world. As part of the project, they also have parents visiting the classrooms. They are currently working on Africa, and every student picked a different book in the class about Africa. They had to read and understand the book, and then they prepared a "speed booking." This means they had 2 minutes to try to convince the other students to read their book. They had to summarize it without giving away the ending, show their favorite moment and explain why, and also share why they recommended reading that book.

It was a fun way to expose students to a variety of books and to work on reading, comprehension, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. It also encouraged the desire to read a book that they might not have chosen if they had judged it only by its cover or title. It was especially rewarding because, at the end, we saw 2nd graders really interested in the books, making it a great way to promote a love of books and reading.
