Middle School Electives at The French American Academy

Electives play a central role in the middle school experience at the French American Academy. They offer students the chance to pursue areas of interest, build practical skills, and learn through meaningful projects that extend beyond the classroom. Each elective provides a distinct lens through which students explore the world, think critically, and express themselves.

U.S. and World Geography and Culture / Journalism and Visual Arts

This elective begins with a global lens and concludes with student journalism and art in action.
In the first half of the year, students study U.S. and world geography through cultural and historical perspectives, building strong global awareness through classroom inquiry and activities such as the Geography Bee.

The second half centers on producing a student-led magazine. Students learn writing, interviewing, photography, and design as they document school life.

This year, a visit to the Whitney Museum of American Art enriched their work as students explored the exhibition Untitled (America), which features a diverse collection of American Modern and Contemporary Art from 1900 to the 1980s. During the visit, students acted as young art critics, engaging in guided sketching and writing challenges that encouraged close observation, creative interpretation, and thoughtful visual analysis.

Students develop:
• Research, writing, and visual communication skills
• Photography, illustration, and publication design
• Critical observation and artistic interpretation

Coast to Coast: Global Issues Leadership Initiative

Coast to Coast connects the FAA students with partner French-American and international schools in North America to explore real-world issues through research and cultural exchange. Each year, students investigate a theme inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with this year’s focus on food systems and sustainability.

Students collaborate virtually and during two exchange weeks. This fall, they stayed with host families in Rhode Island to study local food networks. In the spring, they will host partner students in New Jersey and extend their research. Their work culminates in a final product that presents solutions to the issue studied.

Students gain:
• Inquiry-based research and fieldwork experience
• Cross-cultural collaboration and homestay exchange
• French and English language practice in authentic settings
• Growth in independence, leadership, and resilience

Performing Arts: Theater, Dance, and Music

This elective encourages students to express themselves through performance. Through theater, dance, and music, students strengthen creativity, confidence, and collaborative skills. It provides an accessible entry point for both new and experienced performers.

Students engage in:
• Theater and character work
• Dance and movement
• Music and vocal performance

Why These Electives Matter

Across all electives, students learn to collaborate, apply knowledge with purpose, and communicate effectively. Whether researching environmental issues, creating a magazine, or performing on stage, they strengthen essential skills and discover new interests that support their growth as independent, thoughtful learners.
