5th Grade – English

JERSEY CITY, NJ

I was born in Italy and came to the United States when I was almost seven years-old. My journey started in elementary education, but I spent many years teaching English, Literature, and Composition in grades 6-12. Working with upper elementary students, and helping them with their educational ascent, is now my mainstay. One teacher made a huge difference in my life, and I wish for all students to experience that. I love reading, cooking, participating in The Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and co-teaching with Thibaut and Lucile!

Why do you teach?

“If you want to master something, teach it.” – Richard Feynman, Physicist

Teaching feels natural to me, and I have always followed my heart.  Spending time with students, earning their trust, and inspiring them to trust themselves above all else is my approach to learning.  I’ve journeyed for a long time, and in many ways, the world has manifested before me in the form of a class community.  There is no better destination.

What do you appreciate about teaching at the French American Academy?

There are more than a few factors about why I value working at the FAA.  We have an exceptional and diverse student body, a varied and effective curriculum, and a distinctive environment where voices can truly be heard.  I genuinely treasure the agency of my fellow teachers and the example they set for everyone, everyday.  I also relish La Semaine du Goût!

What projects are you particularly excited about this fall?

A three month collaborative project called ‘The Echo’ will commence in late fall.  Fourth and fifth graders come together to research individuals who have overcome significant challenges in any medium, paving the way for younger generations to succeed.  For example, a fifth-grader might write about a bold pioneer like poet Maya Angelou, while a fourth-grader will research someone inspired by her work, such as the young poet, Amanda Gorman.

During this project, students will explore how individuals can utilize their passions, resilience, and unique perspectives to effect change in the world.
