Perhaps the most exciting day in the French American Academy’s (FAA) High School calendar so far, “Freshman For A Day,” took place on Tuesday, December 10. FAA welcomed twenty potential Grade 9 students from seven different local middle schools to its new campus in Jersey City Heights for a full day of International Baccalaureate (IB) inspired learning
Students compared inventions from the Industrial Revolution with modern inventions and pondered, “Have we learned our lessons from history?” They played European handball — a popular sport in Europe that many had never experienced before. They measured amps and voltage of battery-powered circuits, and they learned French through art and theater. This was just a taste of what the IB Middle Years Program has to offer, showcasing its cross-disciplinary, bilingual, and project-based learning experiences.
But that’s not all! Using the new campus’s industrial kitchen, the freshmen participated in a cooking workshop with professional French chef Jean-Jacques. They cooked — and, of course, tasted — croque-monsieurs, omelets, and some delicious Christmas cake! Cooking will no doubt become a club activity in 2025.
Overall, the day was a resounding success, and the FAA is excited to continue engaging with its founding group of high school students as part of its commitment to making them “co-designers” of the school and the IB program. These students will have exclusive input into classroom layout, uniforms, clubs, electives, sports programs, and more. This is why becoming part of this special group of founding students is an opportunity not to be missed.
