Why Student Passion Belongs at the Center of Education

We recently caught up with our High School Director, and he was excited to share a story that perfectly captures why personal projects and student passion matter so much in education.

What a 16-Year-Old DJ Taught Me About Education

One of the most impressive students I have ever encountered was a professional DJ at age 16. This young man was invited to present at a school professional development for teachers. He spoke to us about his love of music and the development of his craft with such passion that it was impossible not to be inspired.

But don’t be mistaken! This kid was academic!

Between mini demonstrations of his originally produced and curated music, he waxed lyrical about the intricate software programs required to produce his music, the sophisticated combination of musical equipment and computer systems required to put his performances together.

He also demonstrated his clear business acumen, describing his strategies for self-promotion, booking shows and events, budgeting, and investing his profits back into his business. And he was making way more money than I made when I was his age, working part-time jobs that’s for sure!

Alongside his passion project, he was taking courses at school that had him on a pathway to studying music at some top universities. Perhaps the most impressive part of his presentation was the confidence, self-awareness, professionalism, and poise with which he communicated to a large group of adults.

Why Passion Matters in Education

I remember saying to myself, this is what success looks like!

This kid got the education he needed. Knowing what you are passionate about, having a plan to turn your passion into further education and career opportunities, and having developed the maturity and self-belief to get there is a critical component of high school.

Why the IB MYP Personal Project Fits So Well

This is why I’m excited about the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP). In Grade 10, students complete the Personal Project. It allows students to explore a personal interest or passion while developing skills in research, time management, and reflection.

The project consists of 3 main components:

  • A product or outcome
  • A process journal documenting the project’s development
  • A  written report detailing the experience and learning process

Students are assessed on their ability to investigate, plan, take action, and reflect, and must spend a minimum of 25 hours on this project. We will host an exhibition night at the end of Grade 10 for students to showcase their work. Here’s an example from another international school of the types of Personal Projects that are possible.

What a 16-Year-Old DJ Taught Me About Education

I’ve been fortunate enough in my career to come across many more students like the DJ.

It’s clear that one of the most important parts of a holistic education is providing our students with the opportunity to deeply explore passions and interests, and in doing so, develop the critical life skills for success: self-confidence, public speaking, entrepreneurial and growth mindsets.

Finding one’s potential place in the world is the greatest gift an education can give.
