A Fun Historical Adventure:
On Monday, September 23rd, 5th-grade students visited the Museum of Jersey City to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s return to the United States in 1824. The students were able to make connections between French and American history by reciting quotes by or about Lafayette himself. He fought in the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 alongside American generals. His visit to Jersey City as an honored guest symbolized the enduring bond between France and the United States, celebrating the ideals of freedom and independence. Jersey City as an Important Place for Lafayette:
Marquis de Lafayette was a key player in the American Revolutionary War. He supported the idea of American democracy, collaborating in the fight against the British. Lafayette aided in accomplishing the independence of America. He conducted a “farewell tour” from 1824-1825, celebrating and solidifying the relationship between France and the United States. One of his most important visits was to Jersey City, where there were public receptions held in his honor. He got to know members of the fighting forces in New Jersey and form relationships with them. Sadly, a close friend of his, and an important figure of our history, George Washington, was not alive to attend the Farewell tour.
The French-American Connection: A Lesson in History and Diplomacy
An experience like this showcases the strength of the French-American connection for FAA students. It places a historical context on this long-standing relationship between the two countries. The site students visited also represents the complexity of the conflict during the time Lafayette was involved with American forces. He engaged in dialogue with important figures such as George Washington in this space. It has such a rich past and allows students to historicize cultural and political alliances between countries.
