Introduction to Comora Robinson and Her Bilingual Story
This interview with Comora Robinson, a dedicated third-grade parent and newly appointed PTO president at FAA, offers insight into her family’s journey toward bilingual education. Comora, who works in development and relationship management for Nimbus Dance, a non-profit performing arts center in Jersey City, shares her experiences raising her son, James, in a culturally rich and diverse environment.
Choosing Bilingual Education for James
Living just a seven-minute walk from the FAA, Comora and her husband knew early on that they wanted James to grow up bilingual, recognizing the lifelong benefits of learning a second language. Neither of them speaks another language, but they understand the benefits and importance of bilingualism in today’s interconnected world. After researching bilingual programs in both New Jersey and New York, they chose the FAA, and the decision has exceeded their expectations. Comora emphasizes how bilingualism engages different parts of the brain and enhances cognitive abilities, a fact supported by scientific research.
Proud Bilingual Moments
One of her proudest moments came during the family’s trip to France for the Olympics, where James seamlessly switched between English and French. Locals complimented both his fluency and accent, making the trip a rewarding affirmation of their educational choice.
Comora recalls a charming memory from when James was just two years old and beginning pre-K. He would come home from school and greet her with “cou-cou,” an expression he learned from the FAA that means “Hi there” in French. It was a small, heartwarming reminder of how early language immersion was shaping his development.
Another memorable moment for Comora was when James and a friend played video games together at home—entirely in French. Hearing the language come alive in such a natural way within her household reaffirmed the value of the FAA’s program.
Community Engagement and Leadership at FAA
In addition to her role as PTO president, Comora is actively involved in fostering community engagement at the FAA. From chairing book fairs to creating a diversity cookbook for families, she is passionate about connecting parents and promoting language practice beyond the classroom. She even arranges playdates for James and his classmates, where they continue practicing French while socializing.
Embracing French Culture as a Family
Comora’s love for French culture has also influenced family outings, such as mother-son visits to Café Madelaine in Jersey City for James’ favorite treat, pain au chocolat ou chocolatine! She has also become involved with French cultural events, inspired by her growing connection to the French language and culture.
More Than Just Education: A Thriving Community
For Comora, being an FAA parent is about more than just education; it’s about building a community where diversity and bilingualism flourish, enriching her family’s life and helping James thrive.
